What is CAA?
CAA stands for Cellular Antioxidant Activity. It's a method that uses human cells to understand how substances perform as antioxidants. It helps us learn how well substances can fight off harmful oxidants.
What does ORAC stand for?
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, which measures the ability of a substance to neutralize harmful free radicals in a test tube.
Why is the ORAC/CAA combo important?
ORAC has been a helpful tool for measuring antioxidants capacity in sample materials in vitro for over twenty years. CAA is a powerfull tool that in addition gives information of the antioxidant capacity within living cells, it does not say directly what happens in the body, yet it considers some important factors as the absorption, distribution, and effectiveness in a cellular enviroment.
Does a high/low ORAC value guarantee a favorable/bad CAA result?
Not necessarily. While high ORAC values indicate strong antioxidant potential in the test tube, it's possible that substances with high ORAC values may not be absorbed within cells or could potentially harm them. This highlights the importance of conducting both tests for a comprehensive assessment. The combination of ORAC and CAA tests offers a more complete understanding of how a product's antioxidants perform both in isolated chemical reactions and within living cells. It also helps plan better
in-vivo tests in the future.
